Many children and young people in Bexley have had experiences in Emotionally-Based School Avoidance (EBSA)

What is EBSA?

Emotionally-Based School Avoidance (EBSA) is when children and young people have feelings of uneasiness and worries about school and struggle to go to school or while at school struggle to go to lessons. What can EBSA look like?

  • Find separating from parents/carers difficult in the morning

  • They go to school but not their lessons

  • General worries or fear about school

  • Late to school / lessons

  • Complaining of a tummy/headache when talking about school or before school

  • Avoid particular lessons

  • School staff reporting disengagement from learning

  • Prolonged periods of absence

  • Appearing ok in school and struggling emotionally at home

  • Struggling to get ready for school and / or to get into the school building

These are a few examples, children may present differently.
